Here in the office we always like to ask each other questions. This can range from personal interests – for example Victoria is off out for dinner with the girls tonight, Ami has taken up a new interest of bopping away in Zumba classes and I am back in the swimming pool – to more work related topics. We recently queried what we thought our most commonly asked questions were and the following is what came up on top: What exactly is a Stave?!
That in itself is a very good question, something that many of our customers can get easily confused about but once explained it becomes much clearer. I am going to attempt to explain what is meant by this and what the different Stave styles actually are. When we ask what Stave design youโd like we are in fact referring to the widths of the planks of timber that make up the width of your worktop. The smaller the width of Stave, the more planks of timber needed to make up the width of your worktop. The wider the width of Stave, the fewer the planks that make up the width of your worktop. Still with me? Fantastic. Now letโs move on to our different Styles that we offer you and your worktop.
Firstly, we have Classic Wide Block, consisting of beautiful, wide staves of random widths between 55mm – 90mm. You can expect to find around 8 to 10 staves across the width of an average worktop of around 630mm. The wider your worktop, the more staves that span the width, the smaller the width of the worktop the fewer the staves across the width.

Secondly, we have our Tradition Plank, This style consists of long, wide, jointed staves with individual plank lengths. Typically the Stave widths are around 120mm in width and there tend to be around 2-3 joins per 3metre length. Traditional Plank is a great alternative to Super Stave when extremely long length worktops are required. Continuous length worktops up to 6 meters are no problem at all. We can even go over 6 meters provided sufficient notice is given.

Lastly we have our Super Stave worktops – the embodiment of everything we do at Norfolk Oak. Their Stave width averages from 175mm – 200mm. The effects of this are stunning. These planks will run the entire length of the worktop. Creating Super Stave oak worktops with large, full staves is all about attention to detail and they simply look divine.

I remember when I started to work here and how at first I struggled to comprehend Staves and Stave Designs but with a little help from the girls it made perfect sense so I really hope that I have helped you in the way that they helped me.
