Recently, I blogged to you all about our various Stave Styles that we offer here at Norfolk Oak and how they differ from one another. I spoke (typed!) about our Classic Wide Block, Traditional Plank and Super Stave options and it wasn’t until this morning that it occurred to me that I was yet to speak to you about our glorious End Grain. Now it wasn’t mentioned previously because I forgot to mention them but because I felt them worthy of their own unique blog that was separate from our other designs. I chose to do this because End Grain is in an entirely different league. Not only are they beautiful to look at but they are also incredibly hardwearing. Their depth of pattern and colour are like no other and the surface is smooth and tactile. The time and effort that go in to these labour of loves is paramount and with good reason.
When constructing End Grain worktops the first task is to choose the timber. The planks all need to be of equal width and height. Once these have been carefully selected the lengths then need to be glued together. This is done along the length. In order to create the chess board effect that is commonly seen throughout our End Grain products each length of timber needs to be turned 90°.
Once the End Grain has been glued together it is clamped together to enable it to dry. It is upon drying that any excess glue can be squeezed out of the joints and scraped away. Following this it is imperative that we check that the surface is flat. If one side proves uneven then it will be run through a belt sander to ensure an even surface area. Once this is complete the timber will then be cut to size. This must be done along the grain and is a delicate procedure. Sometimes burns can occur but when this happens a light sanding quickly resolves the issue. These blocks can then be arranged to create the worktop, gift or furniture. Colour matching and staggering the joints allows us to achieve a brick weave effect. Once the perfect combination is arranged the blocks will then need to be glued together, clamped and allowed to dry. Once this process is complete the timber will then be sanded further before going through final inspections.
As mentioned, End Grain is extremely durable and hard-wearing but as a result of this it does require more protection. The End Grains are very porous so oil will be absorbed quickly and penetrated deep into the timber. We follow all these steps meticulously and put a lot of care and attention at every stage of manufacturing End Grain so that it is constructed to perfection. This creates a stunning product that is unique, elegant and of the highest quality.
What I find most incredible about our End Grain products is that despite being made from the highest quality timber and manufactured by highly talented professionals the prices are extremely fair.
Fantastic quality, fair pricing & the up most beautiful timber.
