Those closest to me will know that when it comes to making decisions, especially in regards to food, I am terrible. I constantly chop and change and then just when I think I’ve come to a decision I abruptly change my mind. You see, the problem lies in there being so much choice. When fewer selections are available I find it easier to make a choice than when I have ample options. I am certain that I am not the only person who has this problem and if you’re like me, then I know that you are going to struggle in selecting what timber you would like your worktop to be manufactured in.
At Norfolk Oak we offer 8 varieties so in a bid to break it down and make the selection process easier I have separated them in to light and dark timbers. This particular blog will focus on the 4 of our lighter timbers.
To start we have our American White Oak Worktops. Sourced from the Northern Appalachian Mountains our Oak is extremely durable and has a beautiful tight grain structure. In the office we describe the colour as being similar to that of a digestive biscuit. Oak works beautifully in a traditional setting especially when matched with our Oak knobs that are turned from the same timber. We offer our Oak Worktops in all 3 of our stave styles to suit your needs. I would say that Oak is the most ‘hearty’ of our lighter timbers.

Our North American Ash Worktops are considerably lighter than our Oak Worktops but its grain pattern has much darker shades giving the Ash a juxtaposition of tones that complement each other. The Ash is available in our super stave worktop style to enhance the beauty of the loose flowing grain structure. North American Ash has a subtle sheen to its appearance that further enhances its natural beauty.

Maple is the lightest timber that we offer in terms of colour and is incredibly hard wearing with a stunning grain pattern that mimics waves in the ocean. Like the Ash, when finished, it has a delicate sheen that enhances its colour and configuration. With a mixture of light hues, Maple Worktops are fantastic for those wanting a light worktop that still has warmth to it.

Lastly we have our North American Cherry Worktops. This is a compact wood that has distinctive and fine-looking gold and salmonish-pink highlights throughout. Although a very warm timber I have still categorised this as being light due to the dispersed highlights that denote its lighter properties. Cherry looks fantastic against lighter units and provides a natural warmth to its setting similar to that seen by our darker timbers whilst still holding the attributes of our lighter timbers.

Our lighter coloured worktops are brilliant for maximising and enhancing smaller spaces while also being a fantastic personal choice. Making decisions are always difficult – especially when it comes to your home but I hope that this helps making that decision process a little easier. If you are unsure of your favourite timber then why not order a sample from ourselves so that you can get a real feel for what you could be ordering?
